The Artist's Statement
As a fine art photographer primarily, I am inspired by the cumulative observations of daily life, particularly of the city and the life it seemingly entails. My art is a form of research for creating a creative life in a world which sometimes represses it.
Drawing connections and contrasts between my two homes, and the similarities and connections between architecture and music I have developed a playful approach towards exploring the social and psychological effects of music, and community collaboration.
Such is the goal of my recent project “Connect & Play” which intends to bridge the distance between us and the city, our environment and arrive at a synthesised unit of a creatively conceived life. The artwork here has a dynamic and interactive social function which looks towards new ways of encountering art in society and bringing people together.
Through my work I aim to highlight the importance of a return to the appreciation of play, spontaneity and connectedness in a sometimes monotonous, fast-paced life. My work also emphasises the positive effects of initiation and collaboration, social effects of music, and emphasises and encourages authentic relationships with one’s environment.

This work explores versions of femininity, through the photographic self-portrait as a playful outlet.
Through gestural movements to music played in the studio, the images reflect how the female body, in response to music, houses different levels of consciousness which undergo the cathartic, transcendental and transformative processes of dance movements.
Biography
Laura Besancon (b:1993, Malta) lives and works in London.
During her undergraduate degree in Communications and Psychology at the University of Malta, Laura began to turn towards a fine art approach in researching her fields of studies.
In 2017 she moved to London to pursue an MA degree at the Royal College of Art and currently works with photography, moving image, sound and community practice.
Central to Laura’s practice are notions of music, play and connectivity.
Laura also works in the areas of architecture, the social and psychological effects of music, and the intersections between public and private.
She has exhibited at the Royal College of Art in London and TOON Amsterdam. She has recently founded the community project “Connect & Play” where residents of a London tower block are invited to participate in a collaborative work.
